Preparing Students for Citizenship Focus of Monday’s Book Review
Tune in at 8 a.m. CST for an interview with Joel Westheimer, author of WHAT KIND OF CITIZEN?: Educating Our Children for the Common Good. WHAT KIND OF CITIZEN, offers direction on how schools can teach the skills required for a strong democracy to flourish. Westheimer is very critical of the education reform juggernaut that has narrowed the curriculum into focusing on standardized testing in math and literacy. He believes this focus has taken away from imagination and creativity, making teaching more like factory work, and prepares students more to be docile workers in the global economy, and less prepared to be active citizens in a democracy with complex problems.
Joel Westheimer is the University Research Chair in the Sociology of Education at the University of Ottowa in Canada. He is also the author of PLEDGING ALLEGIANCE: The Politics of Patriotism in America’s Schools.
