Book Club and Creative Writing for Incarcerated Youth

I learned about a book club for incarcerated youth in Washington D.C., Free Minds,  from a friend of mind recently.  According to its web site, “Free Minds uses books, creative writing, and peer support to awaken DC youth incarcerated as adults to their own potential.”  It would be great to bring a similar program to Texas, if it’s not already being done.  Tangentially, this program brings to mind the great Ernest Gaines novel published in 1993, A LESSON BEFORE DYING, where the only educated Black man in a small, segregated town in Louisiana is asked to teach a young uneducated Black man on death row.  The novel was also made into an Emmy award winning HBO movie starring Don Cheadle in 1999.  Enclosed is a link to a video about Free Minds: https://vimeo.com/54804045
