Podcast: The Dark Side of Cheerleading in Novel Dare Me by Megan Abbott
I didn’t really think a book about cheerleaders could be turned into a first class noir that would keep me up late at night turning pages (I don’t own a nook, iPad, or kindle), but Megan Abbott did it with her latest novel, Dare Me.
No, most of us can’t imagine being a 16 year-old teenage cheerleader as the protagonist Addy is. But this is a chilling thriller about the struggle for power, the consequences of illicit romance, and a young woman gaining the strength to break from the domination of her best friend. Dare Me has the intrigue and tragedy of a Shakespearean play. But this shouldn’t come as a surprise since Ms. Abbott has a Ph.D. in American and English Literature.
